How to choose a POS for a small business
These points matter most for a small shop. Read them before you look at the table.
Free version and its limits
Many apps have a free version, but "free" is not the same at every vendor. Some cap the number of transactions per day, the number of products, or the number of users, or put a watermark on receipts. Check the limits first. A free version is often enough to start, then feels tight as your business grows.
QRIS support
Most buyers now pay with QRIS. Make sure the app supports QRIS, and check whether it is static, dynamic, or both. QRIS fees are usually set by national rules, not by the POS app itself — but still ask the vendor, because how funds are paid out and deducted can differ.
Offline mode
If the internet at your location often drops, offline mode matters. An app with offline mode can still record sales when the signal is gone, then sync the data once you are back online. Without it, your till can stop during your busy hours.
Easy to use and in Indonesian
If you or your staff are not very technical, a simple app in Indonesian is faster to adopt. Think about how easy it is to add products, train a new staff member, and close the till at the end of the day.
Price per outlet as you grow
Prices are often charged per outlet, per device, or per account each month. For one warung, the cost is small. But if you plan to open branches, work out the total for several outlets first, not just the starting price.
Stock management
If you sell many types of goods, stock records help you see what is out and what sells. A free version usually gives basic stock; full stock features and reports are often in paid plans. Match this to how many items you sell.

- Is a free POS app enough for a warung?
- For many small warung, a free version is enough to record sales and accept QRIS. But free versions often have limits — such as transactions per day, number of products, or a watermark on receipts. When those limits start to get in the way, that is a sign you are ready to move to a paid plan. Check each free version’s limits in the table first.
- Do I need special hardware?
- Not necessarily. Many POS apps run on an ordinary Android phone or tablet. To print receipts you may need a receipt printer, and some shops add a cash drawer or barcode scanner. Start with the device you already have, then add more as you need it.
- What happens when the internet goes down?
- It depends on the app. An app with offline mode can still record sales when the internet drops, then sync automatically once you are back online. An app without offline mode may stop working when the signal is lost. If your internet is unstable, choose one that clearly supports offline mode — see the column in the table.
- Does QRIS cost extra?
- Accepting QRIS usually carries a fee (MDR) that is set by national rules, not by the POS app. So the fee generally applies across all apps, not as a charge from one vendor. But how funds are paid out and deducted can differ by vendor. For exact numbers, ask the vendor directly.
- As a small UMKM, do I need to worry about e-faktur or Coretax?
- That depends on your business status and revenue, not the POS app. Most warung and micro businesses are not required to use e-faktur. If your business is already PKP or needs tax invoices, ask the vendor whether the app can connect to your tax needs. For certainty on tax rules, it is best to consult a tax advisor or the tax office.
- What if I open a second branch later?
- Most apps charge per outlet, per device, or per account. So your cost rises when you open a branch. If you plan to grow, look at the price for several outlets from the start, and check whether the app supports many outlets under one account. Some multi-outlet features are only in paid plans.
